The Process

The export of rice only takes place from the processing units registered by the National Plant Protection Organization as per the procedures laid down in SOP.

Registration of Firm

The first step for rice export from India is to register the company with Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS) and then apply for company PAN.

Get IEC (Import Export Code)

IEC is mandatory for the export of any product from India. You can apply for IEC online from the DGFT website. Following that, select the target country in which you want to export. You must select a country by analysing the demand for rice through market research.

Find Buyer- Once you have finalized the country, find potential buyers. Usually through export trade fairs and expos, online portals, or government organizations.

Rules for Exporting Rice to the USA

Rice from India is the foundation of several businesses in the USA. Also, the consignment is subject to thorough inspection as rice from India is home to Khapra beetles, destructive invasive species. The exporter must adhere to all federal rules and regulations, as stated by the FDA, USDA, and CBP.

Requirement for Phytosanitary Certificate or PSC

The exporter needs to obtain PSC for each consignment before the export of rice to the USA through the online PQIS system. PCS is an official document certifying that the agricultural products or plants are free from quarantine pests.

The exporter can apply for inspection, by attaching a copy of the consignment. Then, the EIA verifies the certificate of origin, invoice, packing list, letter of credit/trade, and shipping/air waybill.

Certificate of origin – the document verifies the origination of the product from the exporting country. The Chamber of commerce issues it.

In all, the NPPO certifies the inspection of consignment according to US requirements. The exporter must follow the SOP for the national system for rice export to the USA.
